How to Prepare for Your New Asphalt Driveway

A homeowner's checklist for getting ready before the paving crew arrives.

Proper preparation before your asphalt installation ensures a smoother project and better results. Here's what you need to do before we arrive.

1-2 Weeks Before Paving

  • Clear all vehicles, trailers, and equipment from the driveway area
  • Remove decorative items, planters, and furniture
  • Trim overhanging tree branches that might obstruct access
  • Mark any underground utilities (sprinkler lines, dog fences, etc.)
  • Contact your HOA if required for approval

The Day Before

  • Ensure all vehicles are off the property
  • Move pets indoors or to a secure area (loud machinery can distress animals)
  • Inform neighbors about construction noise and potential temporary access restrictions
  • Set up alternative parking if needed
  • Water your lawn lightly if it's been very dry (this helps soil settle)

Morning of the Project

  • Ensure gates are unlocked so our crew can access your property
  • Turn off sprinkler systems to avoid water on fresh asphalt
  • Keep children indoors and away from construction areas
  • Have someone available to answer questions (or leave contact info)

⚠️ Important Access Notes

Our trucks need approximately 14 feet of clearance width and must be able to turn around. Please ensure garage doors can open if cars are parked inside. We'll need access to a water source for cooling equipment.

What We Handle

Don't worry about:

  • Demolition of old driveway (we handle this)
  • Grading and base preparation
  • Drainage considerations
  • Asphalt installation and compaction

After Paving: Your Turn Again

Once we finish, you'll need to:

  • Keep foot traffic off for 24-48 hours
  • Avoid vehicle traffic for 3-5 days (we'll give specific guidance)
  • Wait 90+ days before sealcoating
